1. Structure and dimensions
The first factor that we consider decisive in choosing a curling iron is the one that considers its structure and size. Under this category we collect all the considerations relating to the shape of the curling iron, which influences the type of curl obtainable (wavy hair, tight curls, spiral curls, or wider and softer waves) as well as the ease of use of a model and its final price .
We have basically identified curling irons with four different types of structure. In the following paragraphs you will find a detailed description of these three types, each with its own peculiar characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
Cylindrical curling iron
The cylindrical curling iron is what we could define as “traditional”, as it has always been the best known, widespread and requested model on the market. Its structure includes a handle and a cylinder-shaped iron.
The iron is the part that becomes hot, and has a variable diameter, which is to be selected according to the type of loop you want to make, and more specifically:
- Diameter from 13 to 19 mm: This size is ideal for obtaining the “classic” curl, that is the tight one in a “permanent” style that will be particularly defined if you wrap small locks of hair around the iron without leaving space between the hair and the heated bar. This diameter is suitable for all hair lengths, but in particular it is recommended for those with short hair and would not otherwise be able to create defined waves with larger diameter curling irons.
- Diameter from 20 to 25 mm: This diameter is suitable for both, those with long hair and those with medium length hair (around the shoulders). It is ideal for creating a soft and natural ring effect and not a tight curl. Even with this type of curling iron, by leaving more or less space around the heated bar when wrapping the lock, you will get a more or less wide effect.
- Diameter from 30 mm onwards: This type of curling iron is not suitable for those with short hair as these diameters can offer effective results only on hair from the shoulders down (if used on shorter hair it will in fact only give a voluminous effect more than a defined wave). On longer hair, on the other hand, it will be possible to create very soft and wide waves, ideal for giving a sinuous movement to the hair, but not for creating defined curls.
There are also curling irons with a diameter of less than 13 mm which are used to obtain very dense curls, but they are in reality not very common and in demand since already with the diameter of 13 mm you get really defined and tight curls.
Conical curling iron
This type of curling iron provides a cone-shaped iron, which is wider at the base and then gradually becomes thinner towards the tip. It is ideal for those who want to create tight curls but with a “spiral” shape ranging from a diameter of about 25 mm up to the final 13 mm at the tip.
To obtain this effect it is necessary to use the iron holding it with the narrower tip downwards in order to create a wave that is wider at the hairline and then becomes tighter as it reaches the ends of the hair.
Multistyler curling iron
The curling irons that fall into this category are “hybrids” of the types of structures listed above. They are characterized by the presence of a handle on which it is possible to mount different pieces ranging from cylindrical, conical or both. These pieces are characterized by different diameters so as to be able to create more or less tight curls. Other accessories can also be mounted on the handle to create all kinds of hairstyles.
Curling plates
A curling plate has the appearance of a straightener, but, instead of having two smooth plates like a hair straightener, it has two or more heated cylinders that serve to create beautiful waves in the hair. Just like a cylindrical curling iron, depending on the diameter of these cylinders, the effect obtained will also vary, i.e. more or less wide waves.
Automatic curling iron
The last type of curling iron that can be found on the market differs from the previous ones both from a structural as well as operational point of view. The shape of an automatic curling iron resembles that of a handle at the end of which there is a “box” with a rounded shape that “sucks” the hair inside, leaving the curler to do everything by itself. There is no need to roll the hair around the iron and release it after a variable time, but just insert it inside a special opening.
The automatic curling iron allows you to create three different types of waves based on the permanence time of the hair around the heated iron. The diameter of the curls made can be between 13 to 25 mm.
